Purple Mattress Review

Purple Mattress + Purple Products Review

Is the thought of going into a mattress store just the most unappealing thing you can think of next to hitting up your local used car dealership? Yeah, I’m with you. Today we’re totally against visiting any establishment that might require us to interact heavily with a sales associate. Since we can order anything and everything straight to our homes we’ve grown more weary of playing hardball with a salesman. Who thought one day, you’d want to order a mattress straight off the internet, without even laying on it, to have it show up in a big roll on our doorsteps? A mattress can now appear basically in your bedroom within a few days after the click of a button. While this is appealing, there are some drawbacks.  My husband and I have been looking at the Purple Mattress for years. It’s taken us forever to commit to purchasing it because, honestly, we couldn’t get over the idea of never laying on it before spending a few thousand dollars to purchase it. What if we didn’t like the one we got? Yeah there’s the 120 night sleep guarantee but the idea of having to send one back to simply have another show up to try out and then potentially we like that less than the original we had seemed overwhelming so we put off purchasing...until now. If you’re like us and have wanted the Purple but haven’t been able to commit to the no-test purchasing here’s what we did. Plus, I added our thoughts and feelings on the Purple 4, the one we purchased, incase you’re better at committing based on a few reviews.

What We Did

Purple has partnered with Mattress Firm, a United States national mattress retailer, to allow us the opportunity to try out the mattress(es) before fully purchasing. You can find the nearest Mattress Firm to you here. Before you head out call to double check the availability of a Purple mattress to lay on. My understanding is not every Mattress Firm has the Purple, just select locations. We visited the store on Midlothian Turnpike to test out our Purple. They had four iterations of the Purple to test out: The Original, The All-New Purple Mattress 2, 3, and 4, all in queen size. We spent about an hour in the store with Ron, the manager, asking questions and laying on each style mattress. We quickly ruled out The Original and The All-New Purple Mattress 2. We spent the bulk of our time deciding between The All-New Purple Mattress 3 and The All-New Purple Mattress 4. The 3 was supposed to be more firm than the 4 because of the depth of the Smart Comfort Grid (3 inches vs 4 inches) but we felt like the 4 gave us more stability - which yes, we realize is backwards from what the guy was telling us. We also liked the bounce of the Purple 4.

What We Purchased

The All-New Purple Mattress 4 (king)2  Serta BeautyRest adjustable twin bases1 Mattress Protector1 set Purple Sheets (white)* 2 Purple Pillows*

*These items were gifted with the purchase of our mattress during the Labor Day event.

You may be asking yourself, “Why did you get two twin bases instead of one king base.” Well, according to Ron, the Purple Mattress is heavy and the single base for the adjustable king bed would feel more of a strain on the motor. AKA it might wear out and break sooner if we just got one base. Having two bases with two motors would disperse the weight of the mattress and be more gentle on the motors. Plus, he said Purple themselves wouldn’t sell you a single king base if you ordered from their website, so that was good enough for us. (Note, we double checked on the site and they do in fact only offer a king base as two separate twin pieces that you sync together once at our home.)

Purple Mattress 4 Review + Purple Products

(Psst - don’t feel like reading the review. You can watch or listen to my review in my InstaStories under Home Products.)

The All-New Purple Mattress 4

The Short Version: We like it and are keeping it.

The Long Version: All in all we like the Purple 4. It feels soft enough for us, previous pillow top owners, but still gives us the firmness we needed. We like that the Smart Comfort Grid supports our bodies in all the right places allowing us to have better alignment (which has been wonderful for relieving some of the sciatic pain I had) but isn’t so squishy that we sink into it and get stuck. R was also nervous to buy a memory foam-like product because he heard how hot they slept. The Purple has been very cool to sleep on; so cool in fact that I was freezing the first few nights we had it and had to adjust the blanket situation and temperature of our bedroom.

Pros:

  • Perfect candidate for an adjustable base

  • Sleeps cool

  • Supportive yet still bouncy

  • Sits high off the ground (we like this, other people may prefer being lower)

Cons:

  • Does take some getting used to. I didn’t LOVE it for about two weeks but now it’s amazing.

The Purple Pillow

The Short Version: Meh The Long Version: R has tried to sleep on his every night since we got them. Some nights he ends up swapping it out because it’s hard to sleep on if you’re a side sleeper. I, honest, haven’t even tried mine because I wanted to get used to the mattress first. It does have great neck support though and when we’re watching TV in bed it’s pretty awesome. So, not for me right now but I’ll update after I’ve started sleeping on it. R likes his 80% of the time.

Pros:

  • Supposed to be good for neck support

  • Good for back sleeping

  • Sleeps cool

  • It doesn’t go flat

  • You don’t have to mess with it, it just is

Cons:

  • It’s 13 lbs (so if you’re one of those people that HAS TO HAVE your pillow when you travel good luck lugging that thing along.)

  • It’s really square - this is what makes it hard for side sleeping

  • It’s not malleable (so some may like the “it just is” fact about it but others like squishing their pillows up every which way (cough, me, cough)

The Mattress Protector

The Short Version: Nope. The Long Version: Not for us. We really wanted to like it because we want to “extend the life of our mattress” by keeping sweat and all the great stuff they say gets stuck in your mattress over time. The thing is, and this is what killed me, it swishes when you roll over. I’m a lighter sleeper and the swishing sound it made when I or R rolled over was too much for me. It sounded like I was sleeping on a crib mattress. Now, to counter this, our friends also have the Purple Mattress (3) and have the mattress protector and don’t notice the noise at all. R and I totally notice though so that thing came off after about three days.

Pros:

  • Protects the mattress*

  • Does not affect the temperature range of the mattress (aka still sleeps cool)

  • Fits on like a bottom sheet (no zipping around the entire mattress)

Cons:

  • Makes noise when you roll around

Purple Sheets

The Short Version: Buy themThe Long Version: We love them and are ordering a second pair. At first, I thought I was going to hate these. In the store they seemed to have a stretch like jersey cotton sheets which I do not like. Jersey cotton sheets seem to stretch out within a day of sleeping on them and end up tangled around you. After putting the Purple Sheets on the bed though they became less stretchy, making them more like a regular fitted sheet. They keep the bed cool, which is a big perk as other sheets can affect the breathability and coolness of the Smart Comfort Grid. The top sheet is a little closer to jersey cotton sheets as it does have more of a tendency to get wrapped around you pretty easily but all in all it doesn’t bother me or R.

Pros:

  • Keeps bed cool

  • Breathable

  • Very soft

  • Fits bed well

  • Do not stretch out immediately

  • Do not pill when washed and dried

Cons:

  • Top sheet can be a little too stretchy and get wrapped around you as you turn over

  • Expensive
